On Tuesday at 11.30, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan will hold a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.&nbsp;

Mr Pashinyan’s visit takes place in the aftermath of Azerbaijan’s military attack and recapture of the breakaway enclave Nagorno-Karabakh on 19 September, which forced over 100 000 ethnic Armenians living in the area to flee their homes. In a resolution adopted on 5 October, MEPs strongly condemned the unjustified military offensive while highlighting that the Armenian exodus amounted to ethnic cleansing.

They also called on the EU to thoroughly reassess its relations with Azerbaijan and, among other things, to suspend the current&nbsp;Memorandum of&nbsp;Understanding on a Strategic Partnership in the Field of Energy&nbsp;between the EU and Baku government.

Mr Pashinyan has been Prime Minister of Armenia since May 2018.

Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) takes place from 11 to 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing together global leaders and climate experts to establish a new post-2025 framework for climate finance and advance international climate action. The European Parliament participates from 18 to 22 November, contributing to discussions on EU climate commitments, financial support for sustainable development, and a fair climate finance goal that aligns with the polluter-pays principle and leverages diverse financial resources.

This video shows a portrait of Gubad IBADOGHLU, Azerbaijan, finalist for the Sakharov Prize 2024. The footage shows a campaign for his release projected on public buildings in Bonn, Germany, by NGO Global Witness, a plea made by his daughter to the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament and general views of Baku, Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani academic and anti-corruption activist Gubad Ibadoghlu was arrested in 2023 after criticising the country’s oil and gas industry and creating a charity to return stolen public resources. Under house arrest, he faces up to 17 years in prison. He needs urgent heart surgery abroad. His detention was the start of an ongoing crackdown on academics and civil society before the COP29 forum, which Baku will host in November. In its April 2024 resolution, Parliament called for charges against him to be dropped and his travel ban lifted. Ibadoghlu is a salient example of Azerbaijan’s harsh treatment of critics.
