O trabalho de prestação de cuidados em casa e em instituições é um bem público subvalorizado pela sociedade. É mais provável que os prestadores de cuidados tenham baixos rendimentos e condições de trabalho precárias. Além disso, as mulheres realizam a maior parte do trabalho de prestação de cuidados não remunerado nas famílias. A ação da UE no setor da prestação de cuidados pode trazer grandes benefícios para a sociedade. A promoção do modelo «rendimentos iguais para prestadores de cuidados iguais» poderá gerar ganhos de entre 24 e 48 mil milhões de euros por ano.
