MEPs discuss misinformation and disinformation circulating on social media, and the dangers they pose to free and fair elections in Europe. The debate takes place after the decision by Romania’s constitutional court to annul the first round of the country’s recent presidential elections following reports of possible foreign interference. It also comes after a “retention order” issued by the Commission to TikTok to preserve documents about its recommender systems and paid political content relating to national elections in the EU between 24 November 2024 and 31 March 2025. MEPs are expected to ask the Commission about its ongoing scrutiny of large online platforms such as TikTok and X under the Digital Services Act.
