The European Parliament has called for urgent action to counter hate speech and hate crime.     
MEPs say they should be added to the list of so-called Euro-crimes, meaning common standards and sanctions across the EU.     

They want to extend the current EU framework - which covers hatred based on race, skin colour, religion and ethnicity - to include sex, sexual orientation, age and disability.    
 
Parliament also called for measures to stop the internet and social media being used to spread hate.

De rol van de EP-leden in de concrete invulling van Europese regels

Het Parlement zal stemmen over wetgeving die het voor EU-consumenten mogelijk maakt om collectieve rechtszaken aan te spannen. Europarlementariërs roepen de Commissie ook op om met een herziene strategie voor de toekomst van de Europese industrie te komen en te stemmen voor een betere bescherming van de journalisten en voor de onafhankelijkheid van de publieke media. Europese wetgevers willen het Schengen-informatiesysteem (SIS II) verbeteren, om de politiesamenwerking te versterken in de strijd tegen terrorisme, grensoverschrijdende criminaliteit en illegale immigratie.
