MEPs call for a first set of specific changes to the European Union’s founding documents, to ensure citizens’ expectations will be met. Throughout the 12 months of the Conference on the Future of Europe, a few key areas of institutional reform were brought up, such as the abolition of unanimity voting in the Council in most areas, and the expansion of EU powers in health and energy, among others.

The call for a Convention for the revision of the Treaties: MEPs debate (Part 1)

The draft report, which will be debated on Wednesday and put to the vote on Thursday, asks for more in-depth analysis, a broader scope, and a more effective approach from the Commission in its annual monitoring of the state of the rule of law in the European Union. MEPs are set to criticise the report’s failure to encompass EU values in their entirety, as well as its methodological shortcomings in highlighting the deliberate nature of the backsliding in Poland and Hungary.

The inaugural plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe took place, in Strasbourg and t is composed of 108 representatives from the European Parliament, 54 from the Council and 3 from the European Commission, as well as 108 representatives from all national Parliaments on an equal footing, and citizens. 108 Europeans will participate to discuss ideas stemming from the Citizens' Panels and the Multilingual Digital Platform: 80 representatives from the European Citizens’ Panels, of which at least one third will be younger than 25, and 27 from national Citizens’ Panels or Conference events, as well as the President of the European Youth Forum.18 representatives from both the Committee of the Regions and the European Economic and Social Committee, and another eight from both social partners and civil society will also take part.
