The MEPs hold a debate in regards to the EU relations with the Palestinian Authority to reiterate the EU’s unwavering support for the two-state solution, as the only viable solution to the conflict, with the state of Israel and the state of Palestine living democratically side by side in peace, complete with guaranteed security, mutual recognition under the 1967 borders, mutually agreed-upon equivalent land swaps and Jerusalem as the capital of both states, based on the parameters in the Council conclusions of July 2014. Established for a period of at least five years, a MFF is there to ensure that the EU’s expenditure develops in an orderly manner and within the limits of its own resources. After its initial proposals of 2 May 2018 and in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, on 27 May 2020 the Commission proposed a recovery plan (NextGenerationEU) that included revised proposals for the MFF 2021-2027 and own resources, and the setting up of a recovery instrument worth EUR 750 billion. A review of the functioning of the MFF, and, as appropriate, proposals for a revision, are due by 1 January 2024, a date which Parliament has called to bring forward. MEPs debate and vote on key EU draft laws to combat climate change by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to protect jobs and citizens. Parliament is set to adopt its position on eight proposals that are part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”. This is the EU’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and have net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (climate neutrality) by 2050, in line with the European Climate Law. The texts approved will be Parliament’s mandate for negotiations with EU governments on the final laws.

Fit for 55: MEPs debate (part 1/5)

MEPs debate on a legislative proposal for a new European Electoral Act, aiming for common standards, a Union-wide constituency, and gender balance. The draft text foresees a system in which each voter should have two votes: one to elect MEPs in national constituencies, and one in an EU-wide constituency with 28 additional seats. The candidate lists for these seats would have to respect geographical representation and a new European Electoral Authority would be set up. MEPs also seek to turn the 27 separate elections that take place currently in EU countries (with their diverging systems and voting rights), in which citizens elect the Members of the European Parliament, into a real, single European election with common minimum standards.
