The overall inventory of nuclear weapons worldwide has declined from about 70 000 in the mid-1980s to about 12 700 today. But the pace of reduction is slowing down compared with the past 30 years. Together, the USA and Russia still possess about 90 % of these nuclear weapons. So far, neither of them has signalled any intention to make further reductions. Experts deplore that Russia’s assault on Ukraine has undermined prospects for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament for years to come.
