Parliament demands measures that enable people with disabilities to participate socially and in the labour market, and propose ways to address discrimination. MEPs reaffirm that the right of persons with disabilities to live independently has to be fully guaranteed through policies and legislation focused on inclusion that will eradicate stereotypes and ableism.

In a wider economic climate of rising prices, but recognising member state traditions of wage-setting and collective bargaining, the EU directive on adequate minimum wages is set to be a major milestone in European social policy.Under the new rules, national minimum wages would have to enable workers to lead a decent life, taking into account the cost of living and wider pay levels. To facilitate an adequacy assessment of existing statutory minimum wages, EU countries may establish a basket of goods and services at real prices, or set it at 60% of the gross median wage and 50% of the gross average wage.

Parliament debates on proposals for improving the social and economic situation of artists and cultural workers, who are among those hardest-hit by the pandemic. Opening statement by the rapporteur, Monica SEMEDO (Renew, LU) and by Nicolas SCHMIT, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights. MEPs are set to call for a common European status for artists, a common framework for working conditions and pan-European minimum social standards for artists and cultural workers. The draft text MEPs will vote on lists further actions to support the sector, like facilitating cross-border mobility with dedicated programmes for young creators and innovators, possibly revised requirements on visas, taxation, and social security, and the cross-border recognition of arts-based education degrees.
