Meie praegused toidusüsteemid tekitavad peaaegu kolmandiku ülemaailmsest kasvuhoonegaaside heitest. Toidusüsteemidel on väga keerukas sotsiaalne, majanduslik ja ökoloogiline mõju. Et toidutootmine kestlikumaks muuta, tuleb see põhjalikult ümber kujundada. Euroopa rohelise kokkuleppe raames avaldas Euroopa Komisjon 2020. aasta mais strateegia „Talust taldrikule“. Strateegia eesmärk on muuta toidusüsteemid õiglaseks, tervislikuks ja keskkonnasõbralikuks.
