SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, "Honourable colleagues, in view of the migratory we are being put to a historical test that we can only cope with by acting together by showing solidarity to the outside world, which is why we are about to vote on an emergency proposal to resettle a 120,000 refugees from Italy, Hungary and Greece to other Member States."

SOUNDBITE (German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, "Mrs Mogherini has reminded this house that 4 billion euros was supposed to be spend in this fund. Up until now 41 million euros have been paid out. And from the EU budget only 5 million. Of course that was spent also on helping Germany and Italy, so I would like to write a letter to the President-in-office of the Council making reference to our resolution of last week. I did so, and I asked that immediate action should be taken, so that the remaining monies could be paid out, and all of the money which is available... (applause). So I am calling on the Commission to ensure that all of the money available in the EU budget for assistance should be made available in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria where its possible and in Turkey, that that should be made available"

SOUNDBITE (German), Manfred WEBER (EPP, DE), EPP Group leader, "I'd like to say on behalf of my group that this is just the first step, we need to do a great deal more, we need to address problems such as secure borders with third countries, and safe return home. Its part of an overall package which will provide a comprehensive European answer and response. The EPP wants to show that Europe is prepared to act and this is why we support your proposal, thank you." (applause)

SOUNDBITE (English), Guy VERHOFSTADT (ALDE, BE), ALDE Group leader, "When the EU budget has foreseen a number of billion euros to give and to fund directly the UN, that after such a crisis only a few millions have been transferred, we support and I hope the whole plenary can do that, maybe with some exceptions there on the right." The moment to act is on the basis of our humanitarian principles,we are not advocating the opening of all borders,but we ae advocating staying in touch with our souls."
