What is ‘carbon leakage’ and how will the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism tackle it? 
Industries in the EU face strict limits on the CO2 emissions they produce. To get around these rules, companies may move production to non-EU countries with weaker regulations. 
The European Parliament has approved new rules to encourage responsible behaviour by EU companies and discourage the import of cheap carbon-intensive products made in non-EU countries.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism explained

MEPs are set to call for bolder steps to mitigate the social and economic impact of the war in Ukraine.    
   
Parliament will set its position on cleaner fuels for the shipping industry and new infrastructure for alternative fuels for road transport. It will also lay out priorities for the 2023 EU budget.

Amid skyrocketing energy prices, the European Parliament backed moves to protect European consumers and businesses from the cost of electricity and gas bills. 

MEPs welcomed the Commission’s proposals to reduce energy demand and slash the cost of electricity while redistributing the energy sector’s surplus revenues to customers.

They asked for more action to shield the most vulnerable and SMEs from rising energy prices.

Parliament debated how to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices. MEPs also looked at the implications of the latest leak of the secretive tax arrangements of the rich and powerful and called for peace and de-escalation of tensions in the Arctic region.

The first European citizens’ panel has been held in Strasbourg! For three days, 200 Europeans gathered for a historic exercise in participatory democracy. They discussed the economy and how to make it fairer and more resilient to crises, but also issues like the digital transformation and youth unemployment.

Parliament overwhelmingly approved the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the UK and also discussed the EU Covid-19 certificate. The research programme Horizon Europe and the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism will receive a boost in funding, while members also pushed to make international tax rules fairer.
