The Paris Agreement entered into force on 4 November 2016 and as part of it a Global Stocktake takes place every five years. The first-ever stocktake, scheduled to conclude at COP28, aims to provide an overall picture of its implementation progress. The European Parliament will adopt its position on new measures to cut down pollutant emissions for passenger cars, vans, buses and trucks (Euro 7). MEPs debate on the report prepared by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). The new Euro 7 regulation would update the current limits for exhaust emissions (such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and ammonia) and introduce new measures to reduce emissions from tyres and brakes, and to increase battery durability.

MEPs debate on new rules to improve EU air quality for a cleaner and healthier environment. In October 2022, the Commission proposed a revision of the EU air quality rules with more ambitious targets for 2030 to achieve the zero pollution objective by 2050 in line with the EU’s Zero Pollution Action Plan. The draft text, adopted by the Environment Committee in June 2023, sets stricter 2030 limits and target values for several pollutants relative to the original Commission proposal to ensure that air quality in the EU is not harmful to human health, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.
