European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva JOHANSSON opens the debate amongst the MEPs on preventing security threats by combating illegal migration and effective return. In the wake of a stabbing attack in Solingen, Germany, on MEPs discuss how to address the unauthorised movements of third country nationals within the EU. The plenary debate follows the German government’s announcement that reintroduces border controls on all its land borders for an initial six-month period. This internal security decision is intended to improve the detection of unauthorised attempts by third country nationals to enter Germany.

Human rights campaigner Nadia Murad told the European Parliament in 2016 that the fights against terrorism and racism go hand in hand.
   
Her speech came as she was awarded the 2016 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought alongside Lamiya Aji Bashar.
 
The pair, from Iraq’s Yazidi community, were soldinto sexual slavery by the Islamic State terror group in 2014. Murad managed to escape and went on to advocate for victims of sexual violence and human trafficking. In 2018 she won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nadia Murad’s speech on fighting extremism | European Parliament

On 24 February 2022, the Kremlin launched an all-out assault on Ukraine. The unprovoked, unjustified and illegal war on its neighbour shocked the world and changed Europe’s relationship with Russia. The EU and European Parliament continue to stand in solidarity with Kyiv, condemning Russian aggression, sanctioning those responsible and providing financial and material aid to the people in Ukraine and EU.

Ukraine: One year on…

Parliament will set out its position on the Digital Green Certificate and vote on the ratification of the UK trade and cooperation agreement. Members will also examine and vote on the Horizon Europe programme, new rules cracking down on terrorist content online and better rights for train passengers. Trade in Europe has always depended on maritime routes. Over the past four decades, European legislation has been central in fostering the development of fast, efficient and fair European shipping. Today, maritime transport remains at the heart of EU trade and Parliament is pushing for it to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

Parliament held a minute of silence to pay tribute to victims of the Strasbourg attack. Members also approved next year’s budget and locked down the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated by the EU. Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov was awarded the 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Members voted on the introduction of humanitarian visas so that asylum-seekers can access Europe safely.
