The 2024 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism has been awarded to ‘Lost in Europe’ a not-for-profit cross-border journalism project. The winning investigation uncovered that between 2021 and 2023, more than 51000 unaccompanied child migrants went missing after arriving in Europe.   The award contributes to the promotion of EU principles and values, as enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. It is named in honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese journalist, blogger and anti-corruption activist assassinated in 2017.

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism 2024

A Greek, German and British consortium has won the 2023 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize. The investigation took an in-depth look into the events surrounding the loss of the fishing trawler Adriana on 14 June 2023 some 50 nautical miles off Pylos, in south-western Greece, killing over 600 migrants who had left Libya some days earlier. 
The award contributes to the promotion of principles and values of the EU, as enshrined in the European Charter of Human Rights. It in honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese journalist, blogger and anti-corruption activist killed in 2017.

The Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism 2023

On 3 May, World Press Freedom Day, the European Parliament officially launched the second edition of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism. Set up in 2019, the prize aims to recognise outstanding in-depth journalistic work on topics that are relevant to the European Union as a whole or to some of its Member States. The award contributes to the promotion of EU principles and values, as enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

The European Parliament has repeatedly advocated press freedom and media pluralism in the EU and abroad.&nbsp; World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the&nbsp;Declaration of Windhoek&nbsp;is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.

Already in 2018 the EP adopted a resolution on media pluralism and media freedom in the EU, noting the political developments in various members states, that have led to increased pressures on and threats against journalists.&nbsp; The European Parliament has also&nbsp;launched the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism.&nbsp;

The prize commends outstanding journalism revolving around the principles and values of the European Union. On the field of legislation, Parliament wants to reinforce protection of journalists and activists in the EU against unfounded and abusive lawsuits aimed to silence them.&nbsp;

MEPs also gave their final green light to new legislation to protect EU journalists and media from political or economic interference during the March Plenary session.

Under the new law, adopted by 464 votes in favour to 92 against and 65 abstentions, member states will be obliged to protect media independence and all forms of interventions in editorial decisions will be banned.
