O cancro é a segunda principal causa de morte nos países da União Europeia depois das doenças cardiovasculares. Todos os anos, cerca de 3 milhões de pessoas são diagnosticadas com a doença e 1,2 milhões perdem a vida. Embora a responsabilidade pelas políticas de saúde recaia principalmente sobre os Estados-Membros, a luta contra o cancro é uma das prioridades da União Europeia.

Meeting on Head and Neck Cancer: The Curable Cancer That Kills Over Half of All Sufferers.

This infoclip shows the Malta’s Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre. It offers advanced diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Opened in 2013, it has tripled the number of beds available for cancer patients on the island. The Centre is part of the new acute general hospital in Msida, close to the island's capital Valletta. It aims to treat 60 % of all Malta's cancer patients and is in keeping with Malta's National Cancer Plan that aims to reduce waiting times for patients and provide better therapeutic practice. Total investment for the project “Mater Dei Hospital Oncology Centre” is EUR 48 802 700, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 41 482 300 from the Operational Programme “Investing in Competitiveness for a Better Quality of Life” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.

Every year, 3.5 million persons are diagnosed with cancer in the European Union. It is a serious health issue that will directly affect 40% of EU citizens with important impacts on the European health systems and economies. The von der Leyen Commission will present a European plan to fight cancer to support Member States to improve cancer control and care. On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the Commission is taking the first step by launching an EU wide public consultation on Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
