Plenary debates with Council and Commission representatives the deteriorating situation for refugees as a consequence of the Russian invasion. According to the UNHCR, more than two millions persons have left the country since 24 February, most of them heading to neighbouring countries.

A fact-finding mission of MEPs takes place from 1-3 March and focus on migration issues in Latvia and Lithuania. The main objective of this visit is to assess the situation of migrants and applicants for international protection in both countries and at the borders with Belarus. MEPs plan to meet with government representatives, Ombudsmen, Frontex, EU Asylum Agency, international humanitarian organisations and non-governmental organisations active on asylum, migration and human rights issues.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine that has started on the 24th of February, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are fleeing to Ukraine's borders with EU countries. Since several years, thousands of migrants try to reach the United Kingdom by taking small boats from the coasts in the north of France. In the city of Grande-Synthe, migrants gather in camps and live in tough conditions, under low temperatures. In Grande-Synthe, associations and organisations support the migrants with food distribution and health assistance.
