During the EP plenary session (13-16 November 2017) in Strasbourg, MEPs vote on the decision to enter into negotiations of the Dublin asylum reform. The amended rules should ensure that asylum seekers are fairly shared among all EU countries, irrespective of where they enter the EU. The results are: 390 in favour, 175 against and 44 abstentions. During the meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) in the EP in Brussels, MEPs vote a major revamp of the Dublin regulation, which determines which member state is responsible for processing an asylum request. The aim is to tackle the weaknesses of the current asylum rules and to share responsibility more equally between member states. All asylum seekers should be registered upon arrival in the EU and people needing protection should also be able to get it much faster, while those who do not could be returned more swiftly.
