Through the prize and its associated network the EU assists laureates, who are supported and empowered in their efforts to defend their causes. This year, the award goes to Jina Mahsa Amini and the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran. Jina Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, who died in September 2022, following physical abuse at the hands of the Iranian security services, while in custody. Her death sparked massive women-led protests in Iran against the hijab law and other discriminatory laws. The European Parliament debates on the current situation in Egypt, and especially, on the sentencing of Hisham Kassem. Kassem is a journalist and dissident who was expected to run in the presidential elections, but he was sentenced to six months in prison, in a trial marred by breaches of fair trial standards. Kassem´s sentence is part of a wave of repression ahead of the elections and is another example of the campaign to silence critics and punish dissent in Egypt.

In January 2022, Zarema Musaeva was violently abducted from a different region of Russia and placed in pre-trial detention in Chechnya and she was sentenced to 5,5 years in prison in July 2023. The Parliament strongly condemns the politically-motivated detention of Zarema Musaeva and urges the Russian authorities, specifically in the Chechen Republic, to immediately release her and drop all the charges brought against her.
