EP Plenary session - Substantiation and communication of explicit environmental claims (Green Claims Directive)

On 9 December 2020, the European Commission put forward the Sustainable and smart mobility strategy to transform the EU transport system in line with the European Green Deal and the EU's Digital Strategy. The Commission pledges to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels by replacing existing fleets with low- and zero- emission vehicles and increasing the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels. Second, to increase the use of the less polluting modes and shift a substantial part of today’s inland freight carried by road (75%) onto rail and inland waterways.In Parliament, the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) is preparing an own-initiative report on the strategy, under the lead of Ismail Ertug (S&D, Germany). The footage shows congested roads, road transport, e-cars, e-buses, hydrogen trucks, high-speed train, cargo train, hydrogen train, inland waterways transport, conventional airplanes and animation of future hybrid-hydrogen airplanes.

On 19 November 2020, the European Commission published an EU Strategy to harness the potential of offshore renewable energy for a climate neutral future. The Offshore Renewable Strategy was widely anticipated as part of the European Green Deal. The Offshore Renewable Strategy aims to dramatically increase the EU's production of electricity from offshore renewable energy sources from the current 12 gigawatts (GW) to 60GW by 2030 and 300GW by 2050. MEPs say that a net-zero emissions economy requires renewable energy to be deployed on an unprecedented scale. MEPs highlight that the cost of offshore wind has fallen dramatically in the last two decades (declining by 48% between 2010 and 2020), making it one of the most competitively priced sources of energy. Infoclip: Renewable Energy Directive

The Industry, Research and Energy Committee will adopt its positions on two draft bills that are part of the “Fit for 55” package to fight climate change. MEPs will vote on new EU targets to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and increase energy efficiency. The measures would also support the EU’s energy sovereignty and security in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. MEPs vote on the Emissions Trading System reform, the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and a new Social Climate fund to combat climate change. Following a plenary debate on 7 June 2022, and the rejection of the report on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System on 8 June 2022 at the Plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs vote again on 22nd June on three draft laws, part of the Fit For 55 in 2030 package. This is the EU’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and have net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (climate neutrality) by 2050, in line with the European Climate Law.
