Vanheede industrial fermentation plant converts organic products into biomethane, which is then converted into electricity via a gas engine. The plant at Quévy is fitted with an installed capacity of 2.45 MW, enabling Vanheede Biomass Solutions to supply electricity to some 5,000 families. The heat generated is recovered in-house. The digestate is upgraded as a soil supplement for agricultural use.

The European Commission presented in December 2020, its ‘Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy’. It lays the foundation for how the EU transport system can achieve its green and digital transformation and become more resilient to future crises. Given the ambitions of the European Green Deal, the result should be a 90 % cut in emissions by 2050, delivered by a smart, competitive, safe, accessible and affordable transport system. The EU outlook for offshore wind is very ambitious. In November 2020, in the context of the Green Deal, the European Commission published its communication on an offshore renewable energy strategy. It aims for 60 GW offshore wind capacity by 2030, with a view to reaching 300 GW by 2050: a 20-fold increase compared with the current situation. However, the sector faces increasing spatial conflicts with fisheries. Fishing is usually forbidden around offshore windfarms. Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in a future climate-neutral economy, enabling emission-free transport, heating and industrial processes as well as inter-seasonal energy storage. Renewable hydrogen can sustainably contribute to achieving climate neutrality in the EU in the long term. Members of the Regional Development Committee (REGI) approved the establishment of the Just Transition Fund (JTF) with 27 votes in favour, 7 against and 8 abstentions during a vote in the European Parliament in Brussels. MEPs request a significant increase in the budget allocated from the 2021-2027 financial framework (from EUR 11 270 459 000 in current prices to EUR 25 358 532 750 in 2018 prices, also referred to as the “principle amount”). This amount would be supplemented with an additional EUR 32 803 000 000 in current prices, as proposed under the EU Recovery Instrument. As part of efforts to achieve the goal of a carbon-neutral EU by 2050, Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) vote on proposals to increase energy storage capacity and guarantee the security of energy supply, with renewables making up an increasingly larger part of Europe’s energy mix.
