The Environment Committee adopted its position in June on revising the EU’s ecodesign framework for sustainable products. MEPs request several changes to the Commission proposal, including a specific ban on destroying unsold textiles and electrical and electronic equipment. They also want the Commission to prioritise setting minimum sustainability requirements for a number of product groups in upcoming ecodesign measures, such as steel, aluminum, textiles, furniture, tires and chemicals. After the vote in plenary on the Nature Restoration Law proposal, the rapporteur, César LUENA (S&D, ES), helds a press conference. The European Commission’s proposal for a Nature Restoration Law is the first continent-wide, comprehensive law of its kind. It is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which calls for binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. The proposal combines an overarching restoration objective for the long-term recovery of nature in the EU’s land and sea areas with binding restoration targets for specific habitats and species. MEPs then proceeded to voting on the amendments, leading to the final amended text being adopted. The European Parliament takes a position on a European Commission proposal setting a legal obligation to restore degraded ecosystems across the EU in order to secure long-term provision of essential services for human wellbeing and support climate change mitigation and adaptation. There was no majority in favour of the proposed regulation as amended in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), responsible for the file, so the Committee hence table to plenary the proposal to reject the Commission’s proposal.
