Emission performance standards for new passenger cars and for new light commercial vehicles: extracts from the debate

Volvo is testing the Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO). A tool aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by measuring CO2 emissions and fuel consumption of high duty vehicles for specific loads, fuels and mission profiles based on input data.

The Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) vote on new binding reduction targets for CO2 emissions produced by heavy-duty vehicles, in the European Parliament in Brussels. CO2 emissions from trucks represent 6% of total EU greenhouse gas emissions (2015). Without EU action, this share is expected to increase. During the plenary session (01-04/10/2018) of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs debate and vote on a new law setting a 45% target, proposed by the Environment Committee, for reducing carbon dioxide emissions for new cars by 2030, with an intermediate target of 20% by 2025. Carmakers would also have to increase the market share of electric cars and low- emission vehicles. During the EP plenary session (16- 19 April 2018) in Strasbourg, MEPs vote on new rules to ensure the EU meets its overall collective pledge, under the Paris Agreement on climate change. By 2030, CO2 emitted by transport, farming, buildings and waste must be cut by 30% in the EU, and any deforestation in the EU will have to be balanced out by planting new trees, according to a set of draft rules to be approved by Parliament. The results from the vote on the LINS report are: 574 in favour, 79 against and 32 abstentions. The results from the vote on the GERBRANDY report are: 343 in favour, 172 against and 170 abstentions.
