This infoclip illustrates the packaging and packaging waste regulation. The proposed regulation would apply to all packaging and to all packaging waste. It would set out requirements for substances in packaging (e.g. restrictions on the presence of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium). Furthermore, all packaging would have to be recyclable. Some packaging must be compostable by two years after the entry into force of the regulation (such as filter coffee pods and sticky labels attached to fruit and vegetables). Furthermore, packaging must be designed to minimise its weight and volume. The proposal would also introduce requirements for packaging to be considered reusable. The footage shows plastic and and recyclable packaging adn different efforts to reduce waste and encourage recycling.

MEPs from the ENVI (Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) Committee vote on the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles. The European Parliament calls for binding EU legislation to guarantee that fashion is not produced at the cost of environmental destruction and human lives. Requirements should be set that prevent unsold clothes from being shredded or sent to landfill just because they are no longer in fashion or the warehouse is full. Only textiles that meet a minimum standard of sustainability requirements should be imported into the EU or produced within the EU. On 27 April, ENVI Members vote on the own-initiative report on the Sustainable Textiles Strategy. The EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles is an integral part of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan. It sets out to create a coherent framework to facilitate the transition of the textiles industry to a more sustainable and climate-neutral model by 2030. Specific ambitions include ensuring that textile products placed on the EU market are durable, recyclable and made largely of recycled fibres, free of hazardous substances and produced in full respect of human and workers.

MEPs debate on a new law obliging companies to ensure products sold in the EU do not come from deforested land anywhere in the world.The new regulation, already agreed with EU member states, helps fight climate change and biodiversity loss by preventing deforestation related to EU consumption of products from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm-oil, soya, wood, rubber, charcoal and printed paper. Before such products can be placed on the EU market, companies must verify and issue a so-called “due diligence” statement that the products have not led to deforestation and forest degradation anywhere in the world.
