Artificial intelligence (AI) raises a number of ethical and political challenges for the present and near future, with driverless cars and search engines in the news.

The term Artificial Intelligence is commonly used to refer to a range of technologies such as software, algorithms, processes, and robots that - contrary to machines only acting on human command - are able to acquire analytical capabilities and to perform tasks.

AI-based systems are already used across many sectors for providing different servicesand is transforming the society.

Robotics and artificial intelligence (2019-2020)

On 1 and 2 October, EU leaders meet in Brussels to discuss foreign affairs, in particular relations with Turkey and the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The leaders are also expected to address relations with China, the situation in Belarus and the poisoning of Alexei Navalny. The single market, industrial policy and digital transformation are also on the agenda

The summit, initially planned for 24 and 25 September, has been postponed as President Michel is in quarantine.

Special European Council, 1-2 October 2020

EU leaders met in Brussels in March to discuss the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Single Market, industrial policy, digital transformation and the economy, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, and relations with Russia.

They took stock of the roll-out of vaccines and the epidemiological situation and pursued the coordinated response to the pandemic crisis. They discussed the key priorities for the single market, industrial policy and the digital transformation. The High Representative and the Commission submitted a report on EU-Turkey relations ahead of the meeting, following the conclusions of the European Council in December 2020. The EU leaders held a strategic debate on the relations with Russia. The European Parliament discussed the outcome of the EU Council and of EU and Turkey meeting during April plenary session.

European Council, 25-26 March 2021

Kosovo is a potential candidate for EU accession. It unilaterally declared its independence in February 2008.

All but five Member States (Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain) have recognised Kosovo’s independence. In the region, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have not recognised Kosovo. A Visa Liberalisation Roadmap was issued in June 2012. In July 2018, the Commission confirmed that Kosovo had fulfilled the last criterion. The European Parliament followed suit and decided to enter into interinstitutional negotiations, which are ongoing. After a landmark agreement on normalising relations (the ‘Brussels Agreement’) was reached in April 2013 by Belgrade and Pristina, the European Council decided to open negotiations on an SAA with Kosovo in June 2013. The SAA entered into force on 1 April 2016. Kosovo’s future EU integration — like Serbia’s — remains closely linked to the EU-facilitated high-level dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, which should lead to a legally binding comprehensive agreement on the normalisation of their relations

North Macedonia submitted its membership application in 2004 and became a candidate for accession to the EU in 2005. The Council decided to open accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia on 25 March 2020, following the Commission's proposals on a revised enlargement methodology.

North Macedonia is currently on its way to becoming the 30th member of NATO and hopes for a swift ratification of the NATO Accession Protocol by all partners; it reiterates its belief in the positive impact that the accession of North Macedonia to NATO will have for peace and stability in the region; underlines that the accession of North Macedonia to NATO is an encouraging sign of improved climate in the region.

Turkey has been candidate for EU membership since 1999. Accession negotiations started in 2005.

As a major emerging economy and a member of NATO and G20, Turkey is a key partner for the European Union. It is recognised as an active regional foreign policy player, with a strategic location, including for the EU's energy security. The EU is therefore committed to intensify further the political dialogue with Turkey in particular on foreign policy issues of mutual interest.

Every year the European Parliament rolls out the red carpet to reward authentic European cinema. The Lux Prize not only honours some of the best European films, but also helps to promote them. It is a tool to support European cinema, to spark debate on current political and social issues and also a way to reflect on European identity and values.

"Cold case Hammarskjöld", "The realm", and "God exists, her name Is Petrunya" are very different films, but they have some things in common: they are European and their stories make us think about politics, values, traditions and they challenge our preconceptions.

MEPs choose the winning film. The winner will be announced during the award ceremony on 27 November during the plenary session in Strasbourg.

Lux Prize 2019

Czechia&nbsp;has been an EU member country since 1st May 2004 and&nbsp;is a parliamentary republic with a head of government - the Prime Minister - and a head of state - the President. The country was formed in 1993, after Czechoslovakia was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. There are 21 members of the European Parliament from Czechia.

On 24 and 25 May, EU leaders met physically in Brussels to discuss the most pressing issues.

On 24 May leaders discussed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk and subsequent arrest of anti-government activist and journalist Roman Protasevich. EU leaders invited Council to adopt further sanctions and necessary measures to ban overflight of EU airspace by Belarusian airlines and prevent access to EU airports of flights operated by such airlines. They also called on all EU-based carriers to avoid overflight of Belarus. Leaders also had the state of play of the coordination of the EU's response to COVID-19 on the agenda. They held a strategic debate on Russia and discussed the EU's relations with the UK, following the entry into force of the EU-UK trade and cooperation agreement on 1 May 2021.

The European Union's&nbsp;cooperation with Ghana is being adapted to the specific needs of an aspiring middle income country (MIC).

The development cooperation focuses on 4 priority areas:&nbsp;security,&nbsp;migration,&nbsp;climage change/resilienceand&nbsp;private sector development.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gender equality remains a transversal priority. Our aim is to help Ghana implement an achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).&nbsp;The EU also aim to pursue a strong, long-term partnership with Ghana and promote its role as a beacon of stability in the West African region.

Montenegro is one of the Western Balkan countries.

In 2006 Montenegro's parliament declared independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. In 2008, the new country applied for EU membership. In December 2011, the Council launched the accession process with a view to opening negotiations in June 2012.

Greta THUNBERG, climate activist from Sweden, came to prominence for starting the school strikes for climate in November 2018.

Her protests grew and other strikes started around the world. The hashtag #FridaysForFuture went viral. By December 2018, thousands of students around the world had joined her in several countries. She joined strikes around Europe, choosing to travel by train to limit her impact on the environment.

On 16 April 2019, Greta THUNBERG came for the first time to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Romania is a EU member country since 1 January 2007.

Romania is a semi-presidential republic. Executive functions are held by both government and the president. The country is divided into 41 counties and the municipality of Bucharest. Each county is administered by a county council, responsible for local affairs, and a prefect responsible for administering national affairs at county level. There are 32 members of the European Parliament from Romania.

Lithuania is a Member State of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and is a&nbsp; Member of the&nbsp; Euro area since 1 January 2015

On 2 July 2019, Christine Lagarde was nominated by the European Council to succeed Mario Draghi as President of the European Central Bank on 1 November 2019.

She is a French lawyer and politician serving as Managing Director and Chairwoman of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2011.

During a vote in the Economics and Monetary Affairs Committee, Ms Lagarde received 37 votes in favour of her taking up the position, 11 against and 4 MEPs abstained. The recommendation will now be passed on to the plenary for a confirmatory vote, which is expected to take place during the September plenary session from the 16th to 19th September.
