Tehnoloogiavaldkonnas käib mõjuvõimu nimel aina suurem võitlus. Konkurentsis püsimiseks koostas Euroopa Liit 2020. aastal strateegia liidu tööstuse arendamiseks. Strateegiast kasvas välja ettepanek luua Euroopa strateegiliste tehnoloogiate platvorm ehk STEP, mille kaudu oleks võimalik rahastada suuremahulisi investeeringuid. STEP aitaks Euroopa Liidu raha tõhusamalt kasutada ning muudaks liidu innovaatilisemaks, kestlikumaks ja iseseisvamaks.
