MEPs debate and vote on key EU draft laws to combat climate change by drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to protect jobs and citizens. Parliament is set to adopt its position on eight proposals that are part of the “Fit for 55 in 2030 package”. Fit for 55: Revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS): statement by Peter LIESE (EPP, DE), rapporteur

As part of the 'Fit for 55' package, the European Commission presented a legislative proposal to review the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The aim of the review is to align the EU ETS Directive with the EU target set out in the European Climate Law to reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 55 % by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. To this end, the amount of emission allowances would be reduced, fewer allowances would be allocated for free, and the ETS would be extended to maritime transport. This would reduce emissions in the ETS sectors by 61 % by 2030, compared to 2005. A separate new emissions trading system would be established for fuel distribution for road transport and buildings. The Innovation Fund and the Modernisation Fund would be enlarged, and Member States would be obliged to spend all of their ETS revenues on climate action. EPRS - Review of the EU ETS

During the EP Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), in Brussels, MEPs vote on the strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reduction in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The EP Paris agreement strategy was adopted, 61 votes in total, 49 in favour, 6 votes against and 6 abstentions.

During the EP plenary session (16- 19 April 2018) in Strasbourg, MEPs vote on new rules to ensure the EU meets its overall collective pledge, under the Paris Agreement on climate change. By 2030, CO2 emitted by transport, farming, buildings and waste must be cut by 30% in the EU, and any deforestation in the EU will have to be balanced out by planting new trees, according to a set of draft rules to be approved by Parliament. The results from the vote on the LINS report are: 574 in favour, 79 against and 32 abstentions. The results from the vote on the GERBRANDY report are: 343 in favour, 172 against and 170 abstentions.
