The European Union was founded on principles of human rights and freedom of expression. That's why the European Parliament supports countries like Tunisia in their ongoing efforts towards democracy. This support comes in the form of legal and political action including the Sakharov Prize and the Sakharov Fellowship. Meet Asma Kaouech, a Tunisian activist and Sakharov fellow, who tells us her story.

The respect for human rights is one of the European Union's fundamental values. Any violation of these rights affects the democratic principles upon which our society is founded, The European Parliament fights such violations through legislative action, and by enshrining human rights in its external trade agreements. The European Parliament also supports human rights by awarding the annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the fight for human rights.

In the second plenary session of October, MEPs decide and reveal the winner of the 2017 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. They also tackle issues concerning a new entry-exit border system, better controlling carcinogen exposure at work, protecting whistle-blowers and much more.
