Parliament present plans on how Europe can produce healthier food while ensuring food security, a fair income for farmers and reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint: MEPs debate. MEPs are expected to welcome the Farm to Fork strategy, presented by the Commission in May 2020, while underlining the importance of producing healthy, animal friendly, high quality and affordable diets to European consumers. They are expected to demand that farmers must earn a fair share of the profit from sustainably produced food. First part of the debate.

MEPs discuss the Fit for 2030 Package, which aims to align climate and energy policies with the new objectives of the European Climate Law to the EP Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). The package comprises, inter alia, legislative proposals for the revision of the EU ETS and for a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), amendments to the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Directives, as well as a revision of the CO2 standards for cars, LULUCF and Effort Sharing Regulations.

During the plenary session (19-23 October 2020) of the European Parliament in Brussels, MEPs debate (21/10) on a binding legislation based on traceability requirements and mandatory due diligence for companies placing products on the EU market to ensure that EU consumption does not lead to global deforestation. The new rules aim at making it easier for small farmers to convert to organic productions and increase overall output in the EU, while ensuring that organic imports comply with highest EU standards. During the meeting of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) in the EP in Brussels, MEPs voted and rejected the objection to a proposal by the European Commission's setting new limits for the use of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) in varnishes and coatings that come into contact with food. The objection by some MEPs was intended to push the Commission to work towards a total ban of this molecule in materials coming into contact with food. In 2016, European Parliament asked for a ban on BPA in all materials which come into contact with food.
