Global challenges – including climate change, geopolitical conflict, erosion of democratic principles and social inequalities – affect people's daily lives and future prospects.A collective European response over the next 10 years could help to address these challenges – and offer benefits worth up to €3 trillion a year. This represents around 18 % of EU gross domestic product (GDP), equivalent to €6 700 per citizen per year. Referring to the European Parliament's work during the 2019-2024 term, our research has identified action in 10 policy areas that could unleash Europe's potential – without the need for Treaty change.

Care work provided in homes and institutions is a public good that is under-valued by society. Care workers are more likely to have low earnings and precarious working conditions. About 9 in 10 care workers are women. In this second episode of the chronicle on care work in the EU, Dr Cecilia Navarra, a policy analyst at the European parliamentary research service, will delve into the paid work sector, paid care workers and their working conditions. Most unpaid care work within households is carried out by women. The 'unpaid care penalty' for women in the EU is estimated to reach €242 billion per year. EU action in the care sector has the potential for high returns for society. Fostering the 'equal earner – equal carer model' could generate benefits of between €24billion and €48 billion a year. EU action to promote affordable, high-quality care could produce an additional €90 billion to €160 billion in benefits each year. In this third and final episode of the chronicles on care work in the EU, Dr Meena Fernandes, and Dr Cecilia Navarra, policy analysts at the European parliamentary research service, will delve into how we can use policy to reverse the vicious cycle of care work and its negative consequences.
