The Digital Services Act (DSA) proposal, debated in the plenary, on Wednesday, aims to create a safer digital space in which users’ rights are protected, including through rules to tackle illegal products, services or content online, enhance the accountability and transparency of algorithms, and deal with content moderation. On Thursday, MEPs adopted a set of measures with 530 votes to 78, with 80 abstentions.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA) proposal blacklists certain practices used by large platforms acting as “gatekeepers” and enables the Commission to carry out market investigations and sanction non-compliant behaviours.The text approved by Parliament with 642 votes in favour, 8 against and 46 abstentions sets new obligations and prohibitions directly applicable to such platforms, with a view to ensuring fair and open markets. MEPs, representatives of the French Presidency of the EU Council and the Commission meet for the first interinstitutionnal meeting to start negotiations. Before the meeting, a minute of silence was hold to honour David SASSOLI.

The IMCO Committee (Internal Market and Consumer Protection) kicks off the discussion on a legislative proposal on the transparency and targeting of political advertising. The draft law would require any political advert to be clearly labelled and include information on who paid for it and how much. Targeting and amplification techniques would be banned when using sensitive personal data without the explicit consent of the individual concerned.
