With winter at our doorstep, we are all worried about high energy prices, which have been soaring, since the onset of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, the EU imported more than 40 % of its gas from Russia. These deliveries are all but gone, a decision taken in Moscow, not Brussels. As a consequence, the EU has to look elsewhere for its natural gas imports. The gas shortage is not only increasing the price of gas itself, but also that of electricity. EPRS - High energy prices

In the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative, the European Commission proposes obligations on fuel suppliers to distribute an increasing share of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), including synthetic aviation fuels, over time, in order to increase the uptake of SAF by airlines and thereby reduce emissions from aviation. The proposal also includes obligations on airlines to limit the uptake of jet fuel before departing from EU airports to what is needed for safe operation of flights, with the aim of ensuring a level playing field for airlines and airports, and avoiding additional emissions related to extra weight of aircraft carrying excessive amounts of fuel.

MEPs hear from Council and the Commission on what is being done to keep energy bills down and to help EU citizens deal with the social and economic consequences of the war in Ukraine. In a resolution adopted on 5 October, Parliament called for the EU’s response to focus on the most vulnerable and advocated more emergency measures to ease the pressure of rapidly rising energy prices on European households and businesses. Inflation has risen to levels not seen in 40 years in the euro area or in many other countries. What is being done to keep energy bills down and to help EU citizens deal with the social and economic consequences of the war in Ukraine. On 14 July 2021, the European Commission presented a package of proposals to equip the EU's climate, energy, land use, transport and taxation policies to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 % by 2030, compared with 1990 levels – the 'fit for 55' package. The package includes a proposal to revise the 2014 directive on alternative fuels infrastructure and turn it into a regulation.
