A draft law to set up a protection system for whistleblowers is voted on in the Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) in the European Parliament in Brussels. The proposal lays down common standards for protection at EU level, calls for establishing adequate reporting channels in the public and private sectors and sets safeguards for those persons in danger of facing retaliation. The result of the final vote is: adopted by 22 votes, with non against and one abstention.

Following up on the 22 May meeting between Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Parliament’s political leadership, MEPs hold a second public hearing with Facebook representatives (the first was on 4 June) to look into ensuring data protection and preventing illegal use of data in the European Parliament in Brussels. Civil Liberties Committee Chair Claude Moraes (S&D, UK) said: "Following a request from the Chairs of the four Parliamentary Committees concerned, which had been adopted and defined by all political groups in the European Parliament, we had expected to hear from other speakers. It is with reluctance, therefore, that we will now hear from public policy team members proposed by Facebook. It will be up to Members to see if Facebook's answers will be sufficient, convincing and trustworthy."
