In a wider economic climate of rising prices, but recognising member state traditions of wage-setting and collective bargaining, the EU directive on adequate minimum wages is set to be a major milestone in European social policy. Under the new rules, national minimum wages would have to enable workers to lead a decent life, taking into account the cost of living and wider pay levels. To facilitate an adequacy assessment of existing statutory minimum wages, EU countries may establish a basket of goods and services at real prices, or set it at 60% of the gross median wage and 50% of the gross average wage. The FEMM Committee organises a Public Hearing entitled “Enhancing gender equality through common European action on care". The hearing examines gender aspects of provision of care, especially with regard to uneven distribution of care responsibilities in formal and informal care, but also the overrepresentation of women in the care sector, the challenges related to this at EU level including the consequences on the gender pay and gender pension gaps and on the work-life balance and the possible added value of common European action on care. Different speakers present their experiences, analysis and suggestions. Highlights of the European Youth Event 2021 (EYE 2021) which takes place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. EYE2021 is the culmination of the European Parliament’s youth consultation process for the Conference on the Future of Europe. Starting in May 2021, in collaboration with pan-European youth organisations, young people’s ideas on the future of Europe will be collected on the youthideas.eu platform. EYE2021 participants will explore these ideas in ideation workshops during the event. After a public voting process during EYE2021, the ideas will be consolidated into a report, presented to the Members of the Conference and fed into the political debate of the Conference.
