As the European Commission prepares to launch a much awaited revised EU pharmaceutical strategy, two recent studies by the European Parliament's Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA) advance possible options to tackle current weaknesses in drug development and ensure access to high-quality medicines, including the creation of large-scale European biomedical infrastructure, and a series of targeted strategies to improve EU health research coordination and reprioritise areas of unmet therapeutic need.

The proposed 'AI liability directive' introduces new rules specific to damages caused by AI systems. These rules are intended to ensure that consumers harmed by AI systems enjoy the same level of protection as consumers harmed by other technologies in the EU. The directive would also ease the burden of proof for victims to establish damage caused by an AI system and give national courts the power to order disclosure of evidence about high-risk AI systems suspected of having caused damage.

The Women’s Rights and the Civil Liberties committees discussed a legislative initiative calling for a directive to establish the minimum rules concerning: the definition of the crime of gender-based cyber-violence and related sanctions; new measures to promote the prevention of this crime; and to ensure justice and support for victims. A panel was also organised for the yearly meeting on "Eliminating Violence against Women"which explored the current state of affairs in policy and practice in focused areas of gender-based violence.
