The European Parliament takes a position on a European Commission proposal setting a legal obligation to restore degraded ecosystems across the EU in order to secure long-term provision of essential services for human wellbeing and support climate change mitigation and adaptation. There was no majority in favour of the proposed regulation as amended in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), responsible for the file, so the Committee hences table to plenary the proposal to reject the Commission’s proposal.

Voting session on Ecodesign regulation and other topics

MEPs debate on their position on rules to protect journalists, activists, academics, artists and researchers against legal actions aimed at silencing them. The draft directive provides minimum standards of protection from lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP) in the EU through early dismissal of these cases, obliging the claimant to cover the costs of proceedings and not recognising third country judgements. The rules should apply in cross-border cases when the claimant and defendant are not based in the same country as the court or when the case is relevant to more than one member state and the disputed work can be accessed electronically. MEPs are also set to call on member states to ensure that SLAPP victims get legal, financial and psychological assistance. Jointly, LIBE (Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs) and FEMM (Women’s Rights and Gender Equality) Committees vote on EU legislation to fight violence against women and domestic violence. MEPs want a uniform criminal definition of rape based on the absence of consent, for cyber violence to be a crime under EU law (including non-consensual sharing of intimate material), and safer and gender-sensitive procedures for reporting incidents.

The EP Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) finishes voting on a draft regulation to introduce legally binding EU targets to restore Europe's damaged ecosystems - forests and agricultural land to urban areas, rivers and marine habitats - by 2050.
