<p>The European People’s Party (EPP) elected Manfred Weber (CSU, Germany) as its lead candidate for the European elections on 8 November 2018, at the Helsinki party congress.</p>

<p>Manfred WEBER, 46, started his political career in the regional Parliament (Bayerischer Landtag) in 2002 and was elected to the European Parliament in 2004. Since 2014, he has served as the chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP) - EPP group. The candidate obtained his degree in physical engineering at Munich University of Applied Sciences.</p>

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has put European health systems under enormous pressure and gaps have been showed up in the way public health emergencies are addressed. The EU is working on how to secure access to COVID-19 vaccines for all and the Parliament supported speedy authorisation of safe vaccines. Also, MEPs paved the way for an effective EU health programme, called "EU4Health" (for 2021-2027), which aims to fill these gaps. EU4Health's three main priorities are: tackling cross-border health threats; making medicines available and affordable; and strengthening health systems.

In 2020, the European Parliament gave its consent to the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the recovery funds to support the economic growth after and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. In the negotiaitions, Parliament obtained €15 billion for key EU programmes. EP negotiators have devised a roadmap to introduce new Own Resources to feed into the EU budget. And MEPs approved the regulation designed to protect EU funds from being misused by EU governments who bend the rule of law.
